Residenza Monverde

Monza, Italy

A contemporary urban condition defined by permanence and growth, where public space and living architecture converge

The project is part of a broader urban regeneration strategy aimed at revitalizing a 28,000 sqm mixed site, partially built and partially greenfield.
Its goal is to transform the area into a new cultural and residential complex, fully integrated with the historic urban fabric and in close continuity with the adjacent city center.
Monza’s urban identity unfolds as a layered palimpsest, where historical, natural, productive, and contemporary elements coexist within a condition of inherent complexity. Rather than replicating this plurality, the project adopts it as a founding principle, shaping a new spatial condition capable of reflecting and reinterpreting the city’s multiple dimensions.

Within this framework, the Park, Villa Angela, the Panoptic Church converted into a library, the portico, and the new Monverde residences are not conceived as isolated fragments, but as components of an interdependent urban ecosystem. Natural, monumental, spiritual, and residential dimensions operate as poles of a dynamic balance, where diversity is translated into an idiosyncratic form of harmony.
The project does not pursue a unified synthesis or hierarchical order, but instead establishes a spatial device able to accommodate differences and transform them into a resource for a renewed urban structure—positioning the site as a reflective microcosm of Monza’s plural and stratified identity.

The masterplan is conceived as a balanced framework, alternating more and less exposed areas, transitional spaces, and sunlit surfaces, offering adaptable conditions for both residents and visitors across seasons.
Particular attention is given to the spaces generated by the new buildings, ensuring protection from wind, solar access during winter, and overall comfort. This approach supports a variety of everyday and collective activities.
Key spaces include the plaza in front of the new library, shaped by the new “H” building to ensure winter sunlight, and the semi-private area between the two towers, carefully designed to mitigate wind effects at ground level and transform potential discomfort into enhanced urban quality. The courtyard building of the Monverde Residences completes the block and defines a plaza framed by the studio wing and the Panoptic Church.

The design concept of the Monverde Towers is based on reducing their visual impact within the urban context, considering multiple viewpoints across the city. The two towers, identical in plan but differentiated in height and color, create a compositional tension that is resolved in the space between them—the heart of the main entrance. Starting from the building footprint and optimal functional and commercial dimensions, the volumes were carefully shaped to integrate coherently with the park system and to give the towers a non-directional, porous character.

This compositional strategy also increased the distance between the two towers, enhancing sunlight exposure, environmental comfort, and energy efficiency by minimizing north-facing surfaces. The towers are multi-oriented volumes, formally articulated to improve residential quality. Apartments benefit from at least three exposures, optimizing natural light, cross-ventilation, and panoramic views. The arrival experience, enriched by the plaza and the porticoed path, culminates in the passage between the towers, forming an imaginary gateway that frames the Duomo Tower and establishes a strong visual connection with the city.
