Podgorica Museum District | Architect of the Year Awards 2025

14 January 2026

a-fact architecture factory has been awarded the Architect of the Year 2025 prize in recognition of its work on the Arts and Culture District in Podgorica, Montenegro.

Located along the western edge of the Morača River, between Gorica Hill and Malo Brdo Hill, the project is conceived as a landscape-oriented masterplan rooted in the city’s natural and historical context. The proposal brings together public space, architecture and ecology in a continuous green framework, creating a new civic destination for culture, education and community life.

The masterplan integrates cultural institutions into a resilient landscape system, dissolving the boundaries between built form and nature. Museums and public spaces emerge from the ground, interacting directly with the river and surrounding park while reinforcing a strong connection to the city.

Sustainability underpins the entire approach, with environmental strategies integrated at both the urban and architectural levels. Passive and active solutions, combined with locally sourced materials and long-term adaptability, support a vision of architecture as a tool for environmental regeneration and social engagement.

The project defines a new cultural and environmental identity for Podgorica, positioning architecture as a catalyst for ecological continuity and collective urban experience.
